Cat discomfort/overwashingMy tom cat (neutered) age 11 years has come in from the garden today and seems reluctant to sit down and is washing his rear end and bottom tail area more than usual. There are no obvious signs of injury and he is also eating his food as usual. Could this be related to worms although we have not seen any? 30/12/05 Answer this question |

It seems he has a pain in his butt. Even though there is no sign of injury local infection or abscess is high on the list of possible causes. Impaction or infection of his anal glands which are situated either side of his anal sphincter in the lower third ie 20 minutes to and 20 minutes past the hour (if you look at the anus as a clock face) will show as redenned swollen sore areas. Worms will sometimes cause anal irritation and urinary stones in his urethra are extremly irritant. Continue to examine the area at the base of his tail and around his anus. Keep him in so you can see if he is passing motions and urine and check that he can move his tail. Take care when handling it. If it is broken or damaged it will be very sore and he will probably let you know it is by sinking his teeth into your hand. If he will let you bathe the area with warm salt and water. If he is still sore in the morning or he cannot move his tail or does not pass water overnight then do not feed him in the morning. Contact your vet and arrange for him to be examined as soon as practical. 30/12/05 |
