Injured KneeOur 7 year-old moggy hurt her back leg yesterday. She isn't insured. The vet thinks it may be a cruciate ligament and recommended operating at a cost of ?400, which we can't afford. Would it hurt her to keep her 'cage rested' for 6 weeks (ie only space for litter tray, comfy bed & bowl), and hope it heals? She's overweight, so we could give her a 'light' diet (she normally steals her brother's food) to help reduce any strain on the joint. They've charged ?100 already but haven't done any x-rays, so it may be that another vet would do surgery cheaper anyway? She didn't have a temp but they gave her antibiotic and pain killer injections. She's now trying to weight bear a bit, so it probably isn't broken. What are our options? 2/1/06 Answer this question |

I suggest you give her a day or two of confinement in a small area or large cage/box. She needs enough room for bed litter tray food and water. Do not allow her to jump onto anything or go up or down steps. So the bed needs to be low and comfortable. Observe carefully how she is walking and if there is no imrovement I suggest she is x-rayed. Bear in mind that if there is injury to the joint the longer it is left the more likely it will be that arthritic changes occur that will be permanent. The light diet is a good plan and it is worth weighing her to see what is happening to her weight. Good luck. Please let us know how she goes on. 2/1/06 |
