Licking and nibbling of the paws

My dog Lucy has started Licking and nibbling at her paws around her pads and toes to the extent that they have now become inflamed, what could be the cause? can I cure it myself or do I need to take her to the vet.?

Anything that causes irritation to the feet can start this off. It can also sometimes be a symptom of systemic disease. Sometimes bathing in cold salt solution will help. Use 1 tablespoonful of salt to a pint of water, rinse well with cold water and dry with paper towels. If not improving or if she is off clour generally then book her in for an examination with your normal vet.

You know when my dog does starts licking at her paws that usually means that I need to clip her nails. I just thought that might be useful to you.
Good luck.

Thanks for that it is the sort of comment that is useful to everyone especially us vets who are trained to look for disease and can easily miss the obvious management answer.
