Skin problem, open wound

Hello, two weeks ago I noticed what seems like a large zit on my dogs back (a few inches to the right of his spine and a about 6 to 8 inches back from his shoulder). It didn't seem to itch or cause him any pain or discomfort whatsoever so I have been keeping an eye on it but wasn't really too concerned. to day it seems to have ruptured. I noticed that it is an open wound and bleeding (very little, some what like rug burn) the would is inflamed somewhat standing out from the skin about 2mm. The wound part is flat and all together looks somewhat plateau shaped. I just graduated college and haven't found a job yet so money is as tight as it can be so I have to be very careful with expenses such as vet bills. I'm worried about my buddy. Any ideas?

PS
I have some pictures but they didn't really come out to well. I can link them if you want but I don't think it will do much good.

The first two things that come to mind are wet eczema (hotspot) or cyst that has burst.

However, as you are obviously US and not UK then there could be insects that burrow into the skin where you are that can cause this kind of reaction.

However, the first thing I would always hit everything with is salt water and I don't have any qualms in recommending the one tablespoon of salt to one pint of boiled cooled water and swished onto the spot every few hours.

It probably needs a better diagnosis to take further and hope Stuart the vet can help more when he sees this.

Bathe it with salt water solution, Tablespoonful of salt in a pint of boiled water and see how it goes. Chances are it will heal and then gradually fill up again but keeping it open as long as possible will delay this and may be even allow it to heal fully.
by all means send a link to photos can not do any harm can it!
