broken toenail on back foot

ive just noticed that Arnie has broken a toenail on this back left foot. Ive clipped off the bit that was dangling but its left a white part poking out ( quick maybe ? ) not sure what i should do next ? is it ok to bathe it in cooled boiled salt water twice a day after walks and see if it heals or should i take him to vets now ?
hes on painkilers atm for a flair up in his arthritis so hopefully that should be helping him with the pain

Most definitely keep dunking it in salt water and I'd say more than twice a day whether you get to a vet or not.

What you have to really watch out for is that it doesn't get infected. Absolutely must catch in time if it does before the infection gets into the toe bone.

im keeping a close eye on it at the moment and bathing it every couple of hours. Thinking about not walking him for a few days to give it time to start healing??..especially as its very wet and muddy and icy around here. Hes limping very slightly but doesnt seem to be in too much pain so thats good.

spot on Chicco, thanks.
let him do the exercise he is happy to do.
Been walking dogs in the snow in Japan. 300 km north of Tokyo and slightly up in the hills. Several feet of snow here and more today.
