Diarhoea

Ella has had diarhoea all weekend. Her meds were changed to ranitydine last week instead of omeprazole which she had for 2 months with no problems after anext ulcer bleed possibly caused by painkillers for a cruciate injury. I wonder if I could give her loperamide hydrochloride until we can get to the vet. Can you help please?

Slowing down bowel motility with Loperamide is probably not the best way of dealing with this. Keep on bland food in small amounts frequently and ensure free access to water and electrolytes. If you don’t have a proprietary election ectolyte add a lever teaspoonful of salt and a level tablespoonful of glucose to each pint of water. Providing she is eating the glucose is less important than the salt.
