Bleeding end of penis

I just noticed that the end of my donkeys penis appears to be completely red raw/bleeding, as if he skinned the top of it?.. there are small blood marks at sides of his legs.... I have no idea how or why although there has been many flies and he is not fully used to handling. Not sure if he hurt himself trying to get rid of flies? he appears in normal form otherwise.

I have only just spent a lot of money on my pony due to laminitis and was wondering whether I could get away with not seeing a vet...
