The use of antibiotics in cases of strangles (assuming that is the cause) is controversial and each case varies. As this has got to the stage of a discharging abscess then early use is impossible so best bathe abscess and stress as little as possible and keep your fingers crossed. 23/8/11 If this answer helped you, please consider donating to our website |

Yikes I just love impossible questions cos the only honest answer is I have not got a clue! however as you say the cause of this is as yet undiagnosed. If it is a case of strangles then any horse that has been in close contact with him could be infected or a carrier. On that basis it would be sensible and responsible not to mix these horses with others until you see how yours is over the next few days. 23/8/11 If this answer helped you, please consider donating to our website |

been down tonight kept everything seperate and have all my brushes ect in disinfectant i have taken all the horses temp the horse that we thinks affected has a temp of 38c his field m8 was 38.5c and my other horse that they have been in contact with is 37.4c thinking of asking the vet to just stop by and either confirm if it is strangles as a few people have mentioned it could be a tooth absess as his no discharge coming from his nose 23/8/11 |

could indeed be a localised infection from wound anywhere in the mouth or throat. It would be unusual to have just one burst abscess and no other lymph nodes swollen. 24/8/11 |
