What should I do if my hamster has a cut/gash?

I fed my hamster as usual at 7:30am and left for school. I then got home from school at 3:20pm. He came out his bed to see me which he normally does when he hears me come into my bedroom near his cage. I immediately noticed a gash/cut on his neck on his left side. It looked like it bled but not a great lol as there was no blood in his cage or bed or on his fur. It's about a centimetre wide and half a centimetre long. It isn't bothering him and he isn't paying attention to it. I gave him a little bit of carrot which is his favourite and he then went back to sleep. He is a Syrian Hamster and 2 years and 2 months old. What should I do with his cut? I would clean the wound but I'm afraid I will hurt him. He is my first hamster and means a lot to me. I know he hasn't got long left as he is already 2 and 2 months but I am very scared he is badly hurt. Please help and give some advice!

Also I forgot to say I do not know whether the gash was there this morning because he didn't come out, which he doesn't normally in a morning but will throughout the day to eat. None of his toys are sharp, but I wonder if he has cut himself with his nails but it looks too big for that.

Firstly is he in a cage by himself if he is how did he do it?
If he is not alone then separate him physically but not visually.
the next problem is that he is likely to scratch or rub it thereby opening it up, however if he is not and it is closing and it looks clean leave it alone and observe him carefully.
if it is dirty and not healing then get him to VET TONIGHT.
PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW IT GOES

He is alone in his cage. I have no idea how he could have done it because there is nothing that could cut him in his cage. I will clean it when he wakes up. I have no idea how I could get to a vet because I know none that work with hamsters and there are probably shut as it's night. Plus my mum would not take me, there isn't much they can do. Please help! It won't be life threatening will it?
