Can I give cod liver oil to my kitty?

Both Sooty and Sweep are getting on a bit now...and Sweep in particular, but also Sooty suffer from a little arthritis in the back legs. Can I give cod liver oil? And if so, how much? I thought I had read that it was safe, and I gave them 1/4 teaspoon in their food tonight...theyve eaten a really tiny amount of the food...but Sooty has now been sick (Sweep is ok) and Im wondering if it has anything to do with the cod liver oil?

Cod liver oil is high in vitamin A. Overdose of vitamin A in any animal can cause abnormal bone deposits in any animal.
1/4 of a teaspoonful of cod liver oil daily would be overdosing a small cat.
A one off dose of this magnitude would not cause such problems though may cause bowel upset. If this does not settle or if other signs of disease appears then do get them vet checked.
I suggest leave it out for a few days then try 1-2 drops twice weekly.
